Since 1959 the neighborhood has known Jack’s Hairstyling, located just west of First Avenue on 68th Street, right across the street from St. Catherine’s park and playground.
The shop is an old and favorite institution which has survived the influx of so many trendy hair salons. It is frequented by very loyal local residents, hospital employees, policemen, etc.
The barbershop has recently changed hands: ownership has passed from Jack, who retired, to Eddie, who has worked there since 1996. The shop now bears the name Eddie’s Haircut & Shave, and is committed to maintaining the friendly neighborhood tradition.
Maybe you’re a bargain hunter and look for a $18 haircut at a cheap neighborhood shop. Or maybe you think that the $200 price tag at an upscale salon will be your best bet to get a great cut.
But, chances are, you’ll find the best barber for you, in an affordable price range, by referral or by trial and error. And once you’ve found the right barber, stick with him or her. And, by the way, don’t be taken in by the hype: paying $200 doesn’t guarantee that you’ll find a terrific barber or get a great cut.
Believe it or not, having a great experience at the barber shop depends a lot on you and how you behave for the time that you’re in the barber’s chair—and how you relate to the barber. Here are a few suggestions.
